Overview
The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center is growing. The Museum’s latest work of art is an Expansion plan that will enhance downtown Anchorage, transform the Museum experience and provide space to collect and exhibit Alaska’s cultural treasures: the art, history and science of Alaska.
The Building
The Museum is growing in scope and mission, and is expanding its physical space to accommodate important new cultural items and new partners in learning.
The Plaza
A two-acre urban birch forest will sit alongside the Expansion, providing a free public space in downtown Anchorage that will celebrate our environment while creating an active, vibrant place for both outdoor exhibits and recreation.
The Collection
In addition to allowing the Museum to display more of what it already has in its art and history collections, the Expansion will allow the Museum to bring home to Alaska over 2,000 important Alaska Native artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution.
The Imaginarium
The popular downtown science center will relocate, bringing its focus on outreach and education to the Museum while helping the Museum incorporate experiential exhibits throughout the building.
The Museum Mission
The Museum has expanded its mission to include science – a natural evolution in a land whose art, history and culture is deeply entwined with the environment.
